Placemats for Christmas

I've made some placemats for Christmas celebrations.  The designs used are "Folk Christmas Redwork" .

The finished size of each placemat is approximately 13" x 18".

Yardage

Using the diagram, this is for 1 placemat:

  1. Fat quarter
  2. 1/8 yard
  3. 1/8 yard
  4. 1/8 yard
  5. 1/8 yard

Cutting

Using the diagram, cut the following for a single placemat:

  1. Square 8,5″
  2. 2 strips 8,5 x 2,5″
  3. 2 strips 12,5 x 2,5″
  4. 2 strips 12,5 x 3,5″
  5. Bias binding

Method

I made the placemats before doing the embroidery so that I could quilt in the hoop with the redwork designs.  If you don’t want to do embroidery, maybe use a scrap block from another project or fussy cut from fabric.

Start by adding the strips for number 1.  Use a 1/4″ seam allowance throughout.  Press the seams.

2. Add strips 2 on either side using a 1.4″ seam allowance.  Press.

3.  Stitch strips 3 on either side using a 1.4″ seam allowance.  Press.

4. To get the centre for the embroidery hoop, fold the placemat in half in both directions and press the edges to line up with the hoop markings.

5.  Make your quilt sandwich and hoop all three layers in the embroidery hoop.  Ensure that you’ve loosened your hoop substantially, else you will struggle and risk cracking your hoop.  Rather tighten after you have the sandwich in the hoop.  This takes some practice, and as you can note my lineup has gone slightly crooked.  This isn’t a huge problem, because I can still adjust the design on my embroidery machine to get as close as possible to centre on the block.  If you are using a design with a definite border, you must make sure that you are perfectly aligned.

6. After the embroidery, you can quilt the rest of the placemat according to your preference.  I did straight lines using my sewing machine and a walking foot.

7.  Finally, add your binding to complete the placemat.  We have a binding tutorial here.
