The Rail Fence block is made entirely in the embroidery hoop using appliqué and flip-and-sew methods. Do all the Rail Fence blocks in the hoop on your embroidery machine and then sew the patchwork blocks together on your sewing machine.
This block is also known as Roman Stripe, which has links to Amish quilting. Not much is known about the Rail Fence block, but a quilt using this pattern is on the Kansas historical society website, and dates to the 1860s.
